Feeding whole prey, need supplements??

I first tried making my own raw diet, got a grinder, all the supplements, spent all day making food. My cats went nuts over chicken and really wanted to eat it all up, until I added the supplements to the mix! They would not touch it and I ended up trashing probably $70 worth of meat. I then gave up for a bit, but want to give it another try. I thought by feeding whole carcus they would not need any man made supplements. Is this true? I was just going to purchase the food online from hare ...

I just got Emu and supplier has included Emu stomach which looked like very rough tough skin outside and wrinkly, not stinky.

The label said "Stomach for treats". I let Palette investigate it and she grabbed bits like mice eats their cheese and ate a little and came back to eat like mice again.

I see she show interests in it but any of you know that if it is basically like tripe in Emu? Any nutritional value to it or better not to feed it?

LOL I've got a ton of questions but I'll just ask them as I remember them

I'm starting to switch my chi's from prepared raw (Nature's Variety, Primal, and Stella & Chewy's) to home-made raw (just meat bought from the store). So far today, I've cut up and portioned out some chicken gizzards and a cornish hen. I had talked to Kelly (Hi Kelly-I'm lilbabyvenus from chi-ppl) and she said she goes by percentages of 80% muscle meat, 10% bone, 5% liver, and 5% other organs. I've been reading up ...

If so, let me know and I'll pm it to you. It's going up on the Feline Nutrition Education Society's website, if they find it factual and properly cited, so I'd rather pm it than post it here.

Hey, guys! It's been a while. Hope everyone's well!

I'm coming here to admit I'm a little discouraged today, a little flagging in spirit. I guess it's a bit my own fault, as I've kinda made it my mission to spread the word on the dangers of dry foods, and promote raw whenever I can.

[rant]Lately, the push-back has been incredible. This whole defense of dry kibble doesn't make sense to me. I try to be understanding, and sympathetic, and kind, but come on, at some point, there has to ...

I wanted to know if anyone on here feeds a whole prey diet to their cat(s).

I just, less than a week ago adopted a little male kitten. He's a DLH and around 9-10 weeks old we think and weighs 2.4 pounds.

I plan on having him on a full whole prey diet if everything ...

1) we've been getting given duck rather than chicken carcasses, which Saxen doesn't like

FEEDING METHODOLOGIES

No obvious signs of death but despite being a mile from home (or a road) I popped him into a poo bag and carried him home. Thankfully I didn't bump into anyone. He's being dissected though so not proper whole food.

Yesterday was day three of the switch. First day I mixed chopped small raw chicken with a smaller amount of wet food. He sniffed and left. Willie got raw chicken for dinner too. I sprinkled some kibble on Neko's food in hopes that he'd at least try it. In the morning Willie's food was still there, Neko's was gone but my parents said ...

Anyone had constipation issues in their cats prior to raw? Did being on raw solve the problem? My poor 9 year old red tabby boy has had constipation issues on and off for the past year or so. He's on EVO and while he does eat some raw, if it has skin or fat on it or the tiniest fragment of bone or cartilage he won't touch it. He will eat ground though and boneless chunks.
I have a bit of fat from the sheep I got and I am wanting to feed thru it so it's not wasted but I'm actually pretty scared of giving anyone pancreatitis. Up to how much fat in a meal can safely be fed? Anyone know? I'm also wondering if the quality of fat makes a difference. This is from a pastured animal that received no wormers, antibiotics, grain or hormones. Does that make the fat better as far as omega 3's go? I know pastured or wild game is higher in O3 than grain fed but is that in the ...

I've just nearly finished reading this book Bad Science and I think it's brilliant.

I share the reference here because it's all about questioning the information placed before us, and I know we're all into that to some degree (we're all breaking from the conventional paradigm by raw feeding).

Only problem is that I can't quite make my mind up whether this book supports us raw feeders are people who look deeper at the information or whether he'd think we're nuts. Either way, having ...

There is a good chance many of you have seen my post on other boards. If not here it is

"A fair amount of people, including myself, are a little hesitant to feed large amounts of liver. What is considered a large amount will vary from person to person. So we will look at what it will take to O/D your cat on vitamin A.

The AAFCO recommends the maximum consumption of vitamin A to be 750,000IU's per kilogram of food on a dry matter basis. Liver has a dry matter basis of 23.54%

I have decided though, that whomever adopts her, I will be okay with canned food with SOME raw until they are comfortable with an all raw diet... it would be nearly impossible for me to find her a raw only home.

In my forever quest towards eco friendly I've given thought to using plastic gladware or similar containers in place of ziploc bags. Bones puncture the bags so easily, they leak all over the place when thawing, and can only be used 2-3 times before tossing. On the other hand, it's easier to store meats flat in the freezer so I can take out a piece at a time when I need to. Containers would be expensive upfront but worth it as they can be used over and over and over again for years. They can easily ...

I wasn't sure which section to put this in as it's about both dogs and cats but here it goes. I have been told several times, when looking at commercial cat foods, that fish is bad for cats and should not be fed as a part of a regular diet. I have never heard this for dogs however. on this forum I see many people feeding fish to their dogs but not to their cats which seems to follow that same trend. My question is, why is fish safe for dogs but not cats?

What is the best fish oil supplement to give the dogs? I was hoping to start them on fish soon, but I don't want to introduce anything too quickly. Should I go to vitamin cottage and pick a human grade fish oil (I have read that this is less expensive due to it not being specifically labeled for canines). If I use a human grade, should I follow the same dosage guidelines they recommend based on weight and should it be given daily? I personally take a fish oil supplement and I take 3 capsules ...

My golden seems to be sleeping all day since I switched him to raw. His teeth and coat look better, but his energy level is low. He has spurts of energy and he does go for a 3 mile walk/jog every morning, but he is 20 mos old and I think he should be more energetic. He is a mellow dog anyway, but the sleeping all day long seems to be a bit much. I wonder if I am giving too much bone and not enough meat in his diet? He is currently getting a chicken back with a breast in the morning and a ...

Chicken breasts ok?

I just started feeding chicken backs, but I understand they are bony and may contribute to constipation. Is it alright to feed boneless, skinless chicken breasts? I am thawing one right now and I have no idea how much it will weigh once thawed or how much to give them. Nugget has not pooped yet today and I worry she is taking in too much bone.

I just started the dogs on raw and they are eating chicken backs and chicken breasts. I would like to add in eggs, but not sure if it is a good idea at this point. Can I give them egg with their chicken and how often and much do I give them? Jedi is a 85 lb white golden and Nugget is a 45 lb border collie / chessie mix.

What does 'enhanced' refer to?

If I want to take advantage of specials at Costco or a local market, how do I know the meat is suitable to be fed to my dogs? What does enhanced mean? I looked at some chicken breasts with bone in and they had substantial amounts of sodium in them - is that natural or is that a preservative and is it harmful? What do I look for and what do I avoid when buying meat from the local markets? Are there questions to ask a local meat market butcher when I am purchasing meat there?
