I first tried making my own raw diet, got a grinder, all the supplements, spent all day making food. My cats went nuts over chicken and really wanted to eat it all up, until I added the supplements to the mix! They would not touch it and I ended up trashing probably $70 worth of meat. I then gave up for a bit, but want to give it another try. I thought by feeding whole carcus they would not need any man made supplements. Is this true? I was just going to purchase the food online from hare ...

I have begun trying to switch Neko, my picky cat, to raw. It took nearly a year to get him eating wet food for God's sake so I know I'm in for a long transition. Yesterday was day three of the switch. First day I mixed chopped small raw chicken with a smaller amount of wet food. He sniffed and left. Willie got raw chicken for dinner too. I sprinkled some kibble on Neko's food in hopes that he'd at least try it. In the morning Willie's food was still there, Neko's was gone but my parents said ...

And I am beyond delighted to discover at least one US vendor has removed dry cat food from their shelves and is refusing to sell it henceforth. While I believe it's a guarantee the Pet Food Industry will eventually have to stop making kibble for cats, I now have hope it may actually happen in my lifetime. *cavorts ecstatically*

Anyone had constipation issues in their cats prior to raw? Did being on raw solve the problem? My poor 9 year old red tabby boy has had constipation issues on and off for the past year or so. He's on EVO and while he does eat some raw, if it has skin or fat on it or the tiniest fragment of bone or cartilage he won't touch it. He will eat ground though and boneless chunks. I'm going to be able to get pork, turkey and chicken at a low cost from my co-op here soon and will invest in a grinder. I ...

"A fair amount of people, including myself, are a little hesitant to feed large amounts of liver. What is considered a large amount will vary from person to person. So we will look at what it will take to O/D your cat on vitamin A.

The AAFCO recommends the maximum consumption of vitamin A to be 750,000IU's per kilogram of food on a dry matter basis. Liver has a dry matter basis of 23.54%

Week or so ago, we had rabbit legs, and everyone devoured them in minutes. Larger bones, so clearly they do fine.

Last night we had chicken backs. Lots of meat still on them, skin, some had kidneys attached. They hummed and hawed for about half an hour before eating those!

I was pondering, other than the possibility that they just like rabbit more.. the chicken is all factory farm raised, while our rabbits ...

Feeding just chicken necks is still debated. BARF and raw meaty bones generally say feeding just necks is fine. While people who stick to the prey model diet say that necks have too much bone.

If we compare necks to the prey model diet we see that necks have three times the recommended amount. Necks are about 36% bone. Some common prey and amounts are: rodents and small birds have about 5% bones, rabbits are 9%, chicken 32%, and quail 10% and so on. So its easy to see why the rough guideline ...

I just picked up my RP order today of more 3 week quail and a new one- L rats. I asked Casey if I could get all white ones because I'm not too fond of feeding patterned animals (I tend to get even more upset because "this one has a heart shape patch!" etc) and he said to let them know when I ordered. I forgot. And what do I have in my order when I opened the box? About 1/3 black hoodeds. I'm feeding PEWs now so I can desensitize myself for when I have to cut it open and take out the ...

We had baby rabbits today (local woman we get our adult rabbits from also gives us natural death kits), I put fish oils on them as I try and make sure they get their fish oils this way (we dont feed fish often enough yet).

The only one who ate it was Penelope (usually the pickiest, never looked twice at the mice). Jasper, who LOVED the mice and would hoard them all for himself, wasn't even a little interested.

So, atleast we know SOMEONE will eat them and they went back into the fridge ...

For those of you who used to feed dry or canned food and now feed raw, what changes did you notice in your cats? What changes occurred quickly and which ones took a while? For those that took a while, how long did they take to be noticeable? I was also curious about the condition of your cat's teeth. for those that have fed raw for at least a few months how are your cat's teeth? Have they improved if they were poor? If they were never bad (or your cat has always eaten raw) have they remained ...

About six days ago I gave Willie his first bone including meal that he ate, the next day I tried him on Venison, which he refused so I brought out some chicken, I wrapped a piece of chicken around a piece of venison the size of my thumb nail. A half hour later the chicken and that piece of venison was gone, no other venison was touched. The next night I gave him wet food instead, he had only ever had this brand of wet food once but did fine with it. This same night he pooped (in litter box) ...

Anyone have a cat who loves a certain food or species? Or hates one? I have not tried Willie on enough yet, basically only chicken and Pork with Turkey organs so I can't really say what he likes, except he ate both chicken and Pork without a problem. So far he hates liver which is a problem. tonight we'll try venison, it would be a big help if he likes it since my uncle hunts deer and I can get a good amount of that stuff for free. So what are your cat's likes and dislikes?

Last night Willie decided his food didn't need to stay on the plate and he dragged it across the cat tree and plopped it on the carpet leaving bone marrow nastiness in it's path. What should I use to clean this up without staining anything? I have enzymatic cleaners, do you think they are good for sanitization?

I am sooooo happy, Willie is really eating the bones, this was the second day he's done it and he really chomped down on them, I'm ecstatic. I was getting so worried about him, I thought I'd have to stop feeding raw for a while so that he was not lacking in nutrients but not anymore! I have to break them up a little for him but other than that he crunches them up. One more battle is organs and once we do that I'm gonna be all set with him, I'm so glad he is doing this, I hope I'll see him have ...

A long shot. But does anyone have info about taurine levels in chicken meat(light and dark) and chicken hearts? Or any other meat? I have emailed many government agencies and universities but none want to talk. Email is probably not the best way to contact them. This site is a great site for looking up nutrient levels of a lot of foods, http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ , but the usda doesn't list any taurine levels for any foods.

So we got some goat from the local grocery store, but it was stewing goat, so lots of bone. I had to cut the bone away and use just the meat, which wasted quite a bit! I'm thinking of going to some local asian markets/middle eat butchers and seeing if they can get me some goat without bone.

This is probably the most common question next to "Is it safe" that raw supporters hear from those who are new to raw feeding or skeptical of it. So here are the directions on how you go about calculating how much to feed, there is also an excel program that another member has that will hopefully be posted in this thread soon to make it easier for all those with excel, but this thread will show you all exactly how it is calculated.

Things to remember are that most raw feeders start ...
