LOL I've got a ton of questions but I'll just ask them as I remember them

I'm starting to switch my chi's from prepared raw (Nature's Variety, Primal, and Stella & Chewy's) to home-made raw (just meat bought from the store). So far today, I've cut up and portioned out some chicken gizzards and a cornish hen. I had talked to Kelly (Hi Kelly-I'm lilbabyvenus from chi-ppl) and she said she goes by percentages of 80% muscle meat, 10% bone, 5% liver, and 5% other organs. I've been reading up ...

I have a bit of fat from the sheep I got and I am wanting to feed thru it so it's not wasted but I'm actually pretty scared of giving anyone pancreatitis. Up to how much fat in a meal can safely be fed? Anyone know? I'm also wondering if the quality of fat makes a difference. This is from a pastured animal that received no wormers, antibiotics, grain or hormones. Does that make the fat better as far as omega 3's go? I know pastured or wild game is higher in O3 than grain fed but is that in the ...

I noticed when she eats big,she tends to pant quite a bit.Does your dog pant a lot too? When she was limited to about 1 lb or so (I fed big once a month but I timed to avoid digestive upset),I do not think she was panting that much.

So, Miss Fatty herself will now eat her raw no problems. She loves chicken, and beef. I think the only thing she STILL refuses to eat is RABBIT! Which is funny, because everyone else goes crazy over rabbit. Weird!

I have decided though, that whomever adopts her, I will be okay with canned food with SOME raw until they are comfortable with an all raw diet... it would be nearly impossible for me to find her a raw only home.

Cliff went on a men's fishing trip last weekend and me, thinking always of the kids when meat is involved, asked him to bring home everything the guys didn't use. I was expecting guts and heads and that's essentially what I got. I picked thru it, some of the smaller fish not worth filleting were tossed in the pile so I gutted them and removed the organs from the other fish bodies (minus the fillets). They will be boney yes but there's still meat on them. I got a large catfish carcass too with ...

In my forever quest towards eco friendly I've given thought to using plastic gladware or similar containers in place of ziploc bags. Bones puncture the bags so easily, they leak all over the place when thawing, and can only be used 2-3 times before tossing. On the other hand, it's easier to store meats flat in the freezer so I can take out a piece at a time when I need to. Containers would be expensive upfront but worth it as they can be used over and over and over again for years. They can easily ...

On the cat forum, there is a fun discussion going on about what exactly LUNG is.

Is it a secreting organ (5%), or is it muscle meat (80%)?

There were arguments for and against, I am torn.

While I do not believe it is actual muscle meat, I also wonder about the secreting organ issue.. someone quoted it as "the popcorn of raw" because it offers little to no nutritional value (when compared to other organs/meats).

I think we can all agree it has it's place in our pets ...

I am going to be trying her with other meaty stuff now, and upping her raw chunks and decreasing her canned goo.

Now... what to do with the 9 cans I still have?

My worry:

She last pooped Monday AM. That's it. No more poopies yet. I thought for sure she'd be getting the runs with the instant change of food (IAMS dry to cheap canned w/raw), but ...

Probably wondered why in the world she was EATING his fun for the night. LOL. So far she's eaten rabbit, rat, chicken and venison. Her poop has been really good an only soft once when she decided at one sitting to eat a whole chicken leg. And the time she got diarrhea ...

What kind of treats do you use for training?

We are planning on having our future dog on raw food, but are wondering what is recommended to use during training. Lots of people recommend using kibble or small treats during training sessions, but are there any raw treats that can be used instead? Or anything you can cut up yourself that isn't too messy? Thanks!

Pup refusing raw now

I wanted some more opinions on this. Brie ate raw chicken with gusto Friday and Saturday. She ate a semi-large piece Saturday night and all day today she has refused anymore. She ate a little canned food off my finger and I smeared a piece of chicken with some and she licked the canned food off and ate the chicken only after I tore it in half. She doesn't have any reason for not eating other than if she was really extremely full from last night but she pooped it all out today and hasn't pooped ...

Charlotte got some calf's feet today, absolutely loves them. They bone that is left looks just like a wreck bone, and it's really small, but it has a space in it, so instead of being a closed circle, it is like a C.

Charlotte got one of her back teeth stuck in this bone, and was gagging on it. I pulled it out, and gave it back to her, and she stuck it in the same way on the same side about half a minute later. I got it out again, but this time didn't give it back to her, there wasn't ...

Feeding the Pregnant and Lactating Bitch

With our first breeding on the way, I am now looking into how to properly feed Teeny while she is pregnant and while she is nursing. I had someone send me their recipe for how they feed theirs, but it is laden with grains, and I don't feed grains in my raw. Also my breeder only started feeding raw after talking to me about it, so he isn't much help in that department (yay for converting him, though!).

Does anyone know more about raw feeding in these situations? I would prefer to stay ...

Same as cats?

I was wondering if you feed your dog the same proportions you feed your cats? As in 80% meat, 10% bone, 5% liver and 5% other organ (approximately). And what is your opinion of adding some veggies or fruits? Personally I would not do it with veggies or fruits because dogs IMO thrive as complete carnivores. On the other hand you hear people say that they are not carnivores but are omnivores and should have some "other" stuff (and others who disagree that they are even omnivores). What ...

We are fans of fasting Betty after a particularly large meal (which, since she's 5lbs, is not a HUGE meal.. just big for her). Anyone else practice this? Thoughts? Opinions?
