    Cookie!!!

Post  Muse on Mon Jun 22, 2009 6:01 pm

Now 6 week old black GSD! Still at the breeder's, we take her home when she's 8 weeks.

She is purebred, and she is my future schutzhund prospect!

Assuming we get her CKC AND AKC (living on the us/canadian border rocks) obedience and tracking titles, as well as passes her CGN and CGC (the akc and ckc canine good neighbor/citizen titles respectively), she'll be competing in the obedience and tracking portions of schutzhund. Whether or not we go beyond that into the protection work depends on about a million different factors, most of which are related to her temperament and drive, then of course time and resources, and not something we'd be doing for probably 5-6 years anyways. I may even decide against doing protection in lieu of search and rescue. Again... there are a lot of factors in that sort of decision. She's a pet and part of the family first, everything else comes after.

Also, point of interest, she's a raw fed puppy! The breeder does 100% raw feeding for all her dogs, and has for a couple decades now. Raw feeding isn't an absolute deciding factor in getting one of her puppies, but it's up there.

But who cares about all that, right? Here's the important stuff: pictures of Cookie!

Wow congrats!! she's a beauty and I hope she grows up to be a great Schutzhund dog. Is there a website on the breeder or her parents? I'd love to see what they look like and what they've accomplished. It's great that the breeder feeds raw, they'll be nice healthy pups for sure!

The parents are Shay and Ero, both working therapy dogs. Linda is an obedience instructor at our local kennel club, and a CGC (Canine Good Citizen) evaluator for the CKC (Canadian Kennel Club). All of her dogs get their CGC titles, and I'm pretty sure they've all certified as therapy dogs. She puts obedience titles on all of them, they're all extremely polite, well behaved dogs, and it's a joy to visit (and she's been letting me visit every week since Shay went into labor even though we weren't sure if I'd be getting a puppy this litter).

Linda doesn't do Schuzhund or tracking herself, but I know offhand that Shay and Ero have plenty of dogs with their Sch3 in their pedigrees (as does Monty). At least partial pedigrees are posted on the individual dogs' pages, too.

Cookie's registered name will be WinningWays Tough Cookie cheers

Oh, I love you too Cookie!!

GSD's have always been a favourite breed for me, think it's Hero from Littlest Hobo that really sealed the deal...

Those look like great breeders! I love to see the OFA tests (in fact I would never get from a breeder who didn't do them) and it's great that they are therapy dogs, it really proves that they have stable temperaments. Good for you for choosing a great breeder!

And I LOVE the registered name lol!

Took some new pics today for the breeder, figured I'd update a little. Things are going well!

Cookie is a very high energy, high drive puppy, so she's a busybusy girl (who I imagine will be into EVERYTHING if the unthinkable happens and I catch a cold or something and can't exercise her properly one day). I haven't really started much in the way of "official" training minus some basics (she has to sit/lay quietly while I get her food ready, only calm patient puppies get let out of their crates, how to behave on a leash/while tethered, and other expected behaviour stuff) but she's been catching on to everything very very quickly, so I have high hopes. We've had lots of people and other dogs over to visit and play and she finds it all very exciting. She doesn't get overwhelmed or overstimulated, and when she's had enough she just comes and lays at my feet.

She gets her 12 week shots sometime in the next couple weeks (gotta get around to booking that), and we'll be going to group training off and on for the dog trainer I work for to socialize her and work as a distraction for the other dogs.

She's been housebroken from the time we brought her home, minus a couple accidents. When she had coccidia (gives them the runs something awful... course of meds and she's all clear now, though), and it's happened she just HAD to go and she told me, but I couldn't get her out on time for one reason or another. But none of these issues have set her back at all on housebreaking, she still lets us know when she has to go, and let me tell you it's GLORIOUS to have a housebroken puppy from the time she's 8 weeks!

Duke, my other dog, tolerates her with the patience that comes from knowing he can out-run her. He's an old man now and thinks puppies are SO. ANNOYING. But he doesn't dislike her, has always been great with other dogs, and she worships the ground he walks on. Today was the first day I let them play outside together without my interference (I had them strictly supervised while she was getting over her coccidia nonsense) and it went very well. I didn't anticipate any problems, but it's still nice to see.

    And here's some pics!

Cookie is just shy of 5 months now (on the 11th) and I was going through old pictures and the difference is shocking!

Our daily routine involves getting up at 7am, letting the dogs out to pee, seeing everyone off to school, then by 9-10am we're on a 10km hike up and around a small mountain. Then it's home for her breakfast and nap. Afternoons vary. I work training dogs, so sometimes she's out with me. If I don't have to work we do other things. She's a busybusy girl!
