In case you weren't aware, Nutro recalled several varieties of Nutro Natural Choice Complete Care and Nutro Max Dry Cat Foods due to "incorrect levels of zinc and potassium".

    FDA Press Release

    Nutro's Affected Products List

If you have purchased any of the affected foods you should STOP FEEDING THEM TO YOUR CAT IMMEDIATELY.

Don Earl, of Pet Food Safety Alliance, has received and posted the results of testing he ordered on some of the recalled food, purchased after the recall was announced. Scary information!

There are HUNDREDS of pet owner complaints on Consumer Affairs' website. Sadly, some of them are for deaths.

Again, if you're feeding this food to your cats, STOP immediately.

*shakes head* So glad my crew was off Nutro a long time ago. Sickening find.

I can't believe people actually still feed commercial foods (mainly the crap ones) and feel OKAY about it. Evil or Very Mad

Just because a multi million dollar company makes dog/cat food doesn't make it safe. I think it gives people a false sense of security and that's where it all goes wrong and puts their pet at risk. I flew thru the big recall we had a year or two ago and I was able to sleep at night knowing that MY dog was safe because he was eating raw and not commercial raw either (which can be just as bad at times). We could've lost one of our cats due to the Nutro (am I seeing a trend here?) canned food but she stopped eating it like a month before the recall. She must've smelled something in there. I wish more cats were like her and maybe they would be alive today. It sickens and angers me that recalls are still almost a monthly or bi-monthly occurance.

The two things that really frustrate me about these recalls, and the test results in particular, are, first, the lack of public knowledge - as astonishing as it sounds, there are still people out there who have never heard of a 2007 pet food recall, despite the fact that thousands (possibly, according to Paul Pion of the VIN, tens of thousands) of pets were killed and that other little fact that it was the largest freakin' recall in consumer history, EVER. They still don't know anything about it! *sigh*

The other vexing point is the push-back I receive from people who are so set in their ways, they completely close their eyes to the black and white, scientific evidence in front of them and not only continue to feed the commercial crap under question, but then begin to attack both the new info and the persons bringing it to light.

"Well, my cat ate the food and is just fine, so your test results are bogus and the person who made them up is just a disturbed trouble-maker....."

    ARGHHHHHHH!

A neighbour of mine, her partner complains, shops in the cheap continental supermarket for the humans in the household but goes to the expensive supermarket to buy the dog food. I can't even begin to explain that *exactly* the same stuff goes into foods in both supermarkets. It just . . . breaks my heart. About 7 years ago we lost my most recent previous dog. He was overweight, had joint problems, heart problems and fluid on his lungs. When I learnt about raw feeding I think I cried for two days to think of the pain I could have spared him.

Steviesun - you can't feel guilty about what you didn't know. You did the best you could for your furry friend at the time. <<<<hugs>>>>

I know Aunty, it was the realisation of what my ignorance might have contributed to that caused the guilt. I just still miss him these days. What's the phrase - dog of my heart. I still miss him such that I can't think about him too hard because it still hurts too much.
