Egg guidelines

I just started the dogs on raw and they are eating chicken backs and chicken breasts. I would like to add in eggs, but not sure if it is a good idea at this point. Can I give them egg with their chicken and how often and much do I give them? Jedi is a 85 lb white golden and Nugget is a 45 lb border collie / chessie mix.

You can feed some eggs. The amount depends on bowel tolerance. Feed one and if it goes over well then feed 2 next time if you want and see if that works too. There are really no absolutes or rules. Raw diets are extremely flexible but tailored to each dog at the same time.

Heather gave a wonderful answer. I'm sorry more of us aren't egg feeders, so are not sure what's "good". Betty can't handle eggs at all.

Charlotte loves eggs, raw or cooked. I like to "surprise" her with one that's cooked once in a while, but not sure if it digests as well. She eats the shells too, so even when she doesn't get an egg, she tries to steal the shells from the compost!

I don't have a set feeding schedule for them, just let her have one once in a while, maybe two one week, then one the next, then I might forget about eggs for a few weeks or even a month, and have to feed a few more to her so I don't throw them out. She hasn't seemed to have a problem with them, but she was never just kibble fed, though she did have some when she was a pup, so her digestive system is pretty top notch. I could probably feed her anything at this point.

You won't know what is too much until you try!

I do know that some people think that there's an issue with biotin in raw eggs, but if you feed the whole egg, there's not a problem. (can't remember which is which for biotin, white or yolk, but if you feed both, there's something in the other part of the egg that makes up for the high biotin, and makes eggs pretty darn excellent, especially the free run ones.) (sorry for the memory lapse, but I posted about this in the winter on another board, and just can't remember what all the links were to look it up again, trust me on it, or look it up yourself on mercola.com, he has two posts on it, the second post he retracts his first post and says that as long as it's the whole egg you feed, the biotin is counteracted by whatever nutrient is in the other part of the egg.)

Both dogs are doing great with the raw eggs. My golden (Jedi) loves to eat the entire egg and he usually comes over to eat the shell that my border collie mix (Nugget) doesn't eat. I wish Nugget would eat the shell because I know that is good for her and it will give her the proper balance. I will try to break it up and put it with her meat. I have given them both 2 each over the weekend, but I will probably hold off for a few days because I think they are high in cholesterol too, right?

Cholesterol isn't a bad thing for a carnivore like it is for a human. Carnivores are designed to handle meat and fat- large amounts of it too. Humans on the other hand eat way more meat than recommended and that's what causes issues.

As far as the egg shell, it doesn't matter one way or the other if it's eaten. That's not the only source of calcium they get so don't worry about it. Some dogs eat the shell some don't. Mine doesn't so I just toss it outside to biodegrade.

Thank you for that bit of information. I had to get cage free this time, but I am aiming for free range with added omegas.
