Feeding whole prey, need supplements?? Empty Feeding whole prey, need supplements??

I first tried making my own raw diet, got a grinder, all the supplements, spent all day making food. My cats went nuts over chicken and really wanted to eat it all up, until I added the supplements to the mix! They would not touch it and I ended up trashing probably $70 worth of meat. I then gave up for a bit, but want to give it another try. I thought by feeding whole carcus they would not need any man made supplements. Is this true? I was just going to purchase the food online from hare today (which I have one cat eating mouse from already ground) and scoop it out to them at feed time. Seems easy enough...but I am sure I'm missing something... Please enlighten me, lol.

Another question is one of my 5 cats has CRF and needs low Phosphorous. I know mouse is low but she can't live on mouse alone, what else is low in Ph?

With whole prey you need no supplements. However, if you buy ground food you need to supplement with taurine, as grinding dimiishes the natural levels that can cause deficiency. Why not just buy whole chickens and such at the tore and hack them up in appropriate meal sized pieces? Meat, bone and organ is all a cat needs. They have perfetly good grinders in their mouths called their TEETH. Even toothless cats can eat raw. It's amazing.

I can't do the whole prey thing where it looks like a whole dead animal with fur and all, grosses me out.

I'm doing ground because it just looks like ground meat, easier on my eye. My cat is so used to commerical canned food the ground meat is easily mixed in with her canned food while I wean her off it. It works out pretty well for both of us, lol.

I will start adding Taurine. Smile

Taurine is a good suppliment, because of the grinding. I'd also suggest adding some fish body oils in, because they help with the skin/coat.
