Wav's teeth- horrified! Empty Wav's teeth- horrified!

Wav's been on raw since weaning but I just looked into her mouth as she was yawning and saw some yellow. Thinking I was hallucinating I wrangled her up and pulled her lips back. Her back molars have a good amount of tartar on them. WHAT?! She eats whole prey- L size rats, GPs, 3 week quail and various cut up pieces of similar size of squirrel, rabbit, chicken. How could she have so much tartar on her teeth? Could she be genetically predisposed to have poor dental health? I am pretty upset about the whole thing and worried she'll lose her teeth if I can't figure out what is going on. Any thoughts on diet change? My mom used to feed small chunks of boneless meat and chicken, turkey to her dog that has now passed away and I've been feeding that to Waverli and Amos. These are not very complicated pieces but she still has to chew them. That's the only thing I can think of that could be causing issues. It's only been like 3 weeks since she's been eating them a few times a week. That's not enough time to cause tartar buildup is it? I'll try and get pictures.

I don't remember what forum I was on, but I do remember a member saying just a few weeks of kibble/canned turned her raw dogs teeth icky!

I know small boneless pieces of meat dont = kibble... but maybe they aren't cleaning her teeth like a bone would?

I also do believe any animal can carry bad genes that cause bad teeth.. maybe her problem wont progress beyond slight yellowing because of the raw?

I'll try and get a clear pic tonight. It's pretty thick at the gumline with that line of like greyish green tartar and then it's yellow about halfway down the tooth.

I heard that too much flouride in the water can also yellow the teeth, no tartar issue, but if the yellow is it, you may want to switch to filtered water..

We're on well water. Wav cannot have city/tap water as the trace amounts of aluminum are just enough to cause her severe constipation issues to come back. No flouride here! Very Happy
