Being poor broke students, we always looked for ways to cut financial corners, and part of that involved going to large scale butchers and grocery stores and getting dated meat.

Not all stores do it, but a lot of them do, and you don't know unless you ask, because 9 times out of 10 they keep the stuff in industrial freezers in the back/basement/whatever.

What happens is stuff that's at the date (will expire that day) is boxed up and frozen. The place we go has different priced boxes. $20 box, $50 box, $100 box, and what's inside is usually worth twice what we paid or more.

Ourselves, we keep most of the stuff we get for us! Lots of steaks, and obviously anything seasoned, or sausages. But our last box there was a bunch of stuff we won't eat (like the enormous roast, bone-in that we got... we'd barely get through 1/4 of it before it went bad, or steaks with lots of fat on them, I can't handle that) that I'm sure Duke will be thrilled to pick at.

Just wanted to share that bit of info, I've noticed with the people I go to school with that there are a lot of them who don't know about meats being frozen the day before they expire at the grocery store and butchers, and discount meat is obviously full of win!

The meats at my local stores are tossed in the dumpster on expiration date. I used to have a guy that sold me whatever they had for 99c/lb but he left and the new meat guys were jerks.

Wow, that's really stupid. The stuff is written off when it hits the date anyways, it's all profit to just sell it!
